EVENTS

Workman High School maintained a distance learning environment for the 2020-2021 school year. As  a result all meetings were done online for the year.  It was a challenge, but it did not mean we did not get things done for our community while also building relationships with one another

Creating a community

Girls Build Meetings

Lasalette Toys for Tots

Every Thursday at lunch the Girls Build cabinet hosts a meeting to discuss upcoming events like sales for LOBO Market, the monthly bulletin board update, and workshop days to make posters for big events. With this we get to build a stronger connection with the team, share ideas, give advice, and also encourage them to spread positivity around campus.
We strive to give back to our community and we had the opportunity to wrap toys for kids with low income households for Christmas with the help of Toys for Tots and the USMC. It was an amazing experience seeing all the kids receive their gifts with a big smile on their face as well as their families which only warmed our hearts.

Exposing young ladies to opportunities in STEM

LA Promise fund Sumitt

The LA Promise Fund Summit was an unforgettable experience just like all of the summits we attend. They each give us the opportunity to learn something new. It was a big convention center filled with hundreds of girls from different schools and it makes you realize there's a whole empire of strong intelligent women out there that encourage you to be or do something great. There were four outstanding women presenting what they work in and what they have done to get were they are now which inspired the rest of us to take action no matter our situation. It wasn't all just serious talk. There was a really cool DJ and also a live performance by Daya!!

LA Metro Sumitt

The LA Metro Summit got more into the topic of all the different types of jobs and job opportunities LA Metro has to offer. There were different booths we could stop at and listen to the presenters and get a feel for their job. Then we had the chance to step into a conference room and talk in small groups with women that run and create our street lanes and explained how they make them as safe as possible for us. They also took any request we had and our opinions.

Giving Back at School

Women's Month, Breast Cancer awarness Month

For Women's Month and Breast Cancer Awareness month we created two posters with Rosie the Riveter a bogus icon for female empowerment and a poster with a big pink ribbon that signifies breast cancer awareness. We had students come up and write the name of an important woman in their life to honor them for women's month and write the name of a woman they admire or know who has or has won the fight of breast cancer on a small pink ribbon.

Sadies

Girls Build was in charge of selling food for Sadies for the last two years. The first year we sold hotdogs and hamburgers and the second year we sold steak nachos. We also hosted a lunch rally in the amphitheater filled with games where the students won free tickets to the dance and food. We created a big poster where students could take pictures in front of and share with friends. Both sales were very successful and we also had a great time after at the dance!!

Play Day, Back to School Treat

Easter egg hunt, KidChella

For the month of April, we decided to host an Easter egg hunt for the students. We distributed 300 eggs including golden eggs around the whole school that contained a coupon for free snacks. Whoever found the most amount of eggs won an Easter basket that was filled with snacks, stuffed animals and movie tickets.  Girls Build also sold our famous corn in a cup for a small carnival event held after school for kids in elementary from our district to get to visit our campus and eventually attend our school in the near future.
We held a play day for the new Girls Build team 2019-2020 that was filled with ice breakers and  games as well as conversations to create a bond with the new team. We made new friends and shared some delicious food at the end. Once the first week of school ended we handed every student a goody bag and a note wishing them good luck for the rest of the school year to spread positivity.
